How This Route Works

Youth organisations or eligible informal groups design a project around a shared theme, apply for funding and recruit participants for the approved countries and dates. Activities are educational and participatory rather than academic lessons, work or tourism.

To find a real opportunity, look for a current call from a youth organisation, National Agency or the European Youth Portal. Check the dates, countries, age range, group profile and any participant contribution before applying.

Eligibility criteria

  • AgeParticipants are generally 13–30; group leaders must be at least 18.
  • Residence and group routeYou must reside in the country of the sending or receiving organisation and join through an eligible organisation or informal group.
  • Live callThe approved project determines dates, countries, theme and participant profile.
  • Learning purposeThe exchange must use non-formal learning around a shared programme.
  • SelectionOrganisers can set relevant project-specific criteria within the official rules.
  • Practical conditionsTravel support, accommodation, insurance and contributions must be checked with the organiser.

Important to know

Language practice can be a benefit, but Youth Exchanges are not language courses, jobs, formal study or volunteering placements.
