About Au pair abroad – live with a host family

An au pair stay is a cultural exchange in which a young person lives with a host family and helps with childcare and agreed light household tasks. In return, the family normally provides accommodation, meals and pocket money, creating a comparatively accessible way to experience daily life abroad and develop language confidence. Stays can range from a summer placement to a year or longer, depending on the destination, host-family agreement and immigration rules. The experience can offer strong cultural immersion, greater independence and meaningful experience with children, but it is not a single worldwide programme with one application process or universal conditions. Age limits, working hours, pocket-money levels, insurance, social protection and visa requirements vary significantly between countries. A good placement depends on a clear written agreement, realistic expectations and careful verification of the host family or agency. Au pair work is also different from ordinary domestic employment: the cultural and family-living element is central, while the amount and nature of childcare must remain within the destination’s legal framework.
