Working Holiday guide

Working Holiday Visas, Clearly Explained

A Working Holiday Visa lets eligible passport holders travel and take temporary work in a partner country. The exact age, duration, funds and quota depend on the agreement attached to your passport.

Usually ages 18–30

Some routes extend to 35

Often up to 12 months

Rules depend on passport

Eligibility is country-specific

Your nationality—not simply where you live—determines which agreements you can use. Most routes cover ages 18–30; selected passport and destination combinations extend to 35. Previous participation, dependants, health insurance and proof of funds can also affect eligibility.

Quotas are not all managed the same way

Some schemes remain open without a small annual cap. Others have annual quotas, application rounds or invitation pools. A programme can therefore be legally available but temporarily closed or highly competitive. Always confirm the current status on the destination’s official immigration website.

The real experience

PVTs are strongest for independent people who want to combine work and travel. Australia and Canada are relatively work-focused; Japan, South Korea and Taiwan often reward cultural and language preparation. Work is permitted, but employment is never guaranteed.

Always verify the current rules. Immigration conditions, quotas, funding and application periods can change. Use the official source linked from the individual programme page before applying.
