About this programme

Austria’s overseas voluntary service has three routes: Gedenkdienst focuses on Holocaust remembrance; Friedensdienst on peace-related work; Sozialdienst on social support. Placements can involve education, historical research or community assistance through recognised organising bodies.

The service lasts six to twelve months and includes preparation, supervision, pocket money and health, accident and pension insurance. It offers a defined international commitment with a public-interest purpose. Citizens of other EU countries can participate in principle; recognition towards Austrian civilian-service obligations is a separate question.

Eligibility criteria

  • AgeThe government states a general minimum of 17; providers and placements may set further conditions.
  • CitizenshipOpen in principle to citizens of other EU countries as well as Austrian applicants.
  • SelectionApply through a recognised provider; preparation and host requirements apply.
  • Previous participationThe statutory overseas service can normally be completed only once.

Important to know

Civilian-service recognition requires an eligible uninterrupted service of at least ten months. Confirm eligibility with the Austrian Civilian Service Agency. The provider confirms language expectations, allowance and which travel or accommodation expenses are covered.
