About Bel’J Volunteering

Bel’J is a joint programme of Belgium’s Flemish, French-speaking and German-speaking Communities. It is not a generic Belgium-wide placement: your legal-residence community determines the application agency and the other community determines the eligible host route.

French-speaking applicants normally need two years’ residence in Wallonia or Brussels; Flemish applicants must legally reside in Flanders; German-speaking applicants use the Jugendbüro route. One to three young people can volunteer with an approved organisation in another language community.

Eligibility criteria

  • AgeYou must be 16–30 when participating.
  • Residence routeYour legal-residence community—not a universal passport list—determines the agency and application process.
  • DestinationThe host must be in another Belgian language community and meet the route’s approval rules.
  • DurationDutch- and German-speaking routes publish 10 days–3 months continuously; the French-speaking route publishes a two-week minimum. A project may be spread over six months.
  • ActivityThe placement is voluntary and cannot be treated as salaried employment or a compulsory internship.
  • FundingParticipant pages currently state €44 per day, capped at €1,760 per year. The responsible agency confirms the award and eligible costs.

Residence community, host community and application route must be checked together. Do not book or start the activity until the responsible agency has confirmed the host, dates and funding.
