About Blue Book – European Commission

Blue Book – European Commission is the European Commission’s five-month paid traineeship, recruited through central application rounds and a competitive preselection process. The programme is intended to turn international mobility into practical learning, professional exposure or a recognised training experience. Its value depends on clear learning objectives, appropriate supervision and realistic funding, while access may be organised through a school, training body, public service or partner organisation.

Eligibility criteria

  • AudienceUniversity graduates for the standard administrative and translation routes; eligible vocational-education graduates for the dedicated VET route.
  • Age limit18 or over; no general upper age limit.
  • NationalityEU nationals and a limited number of non-EU candidates; some services recruit only EU nationals.
  • QualificationCompleted degree of at least 180 ECTS for the graduate route, or an eligible EQF level 3–5 vocational qualification for the VET route.
  • Language requirementDepends on the route; the graduate administrative route generally requires C1 in English, French or German and another EU language for EU nationals.

Important to know

Selection is competitive and each application is valid for one session. Previous experience in EU institutions is restricted, and the dedicated vocational route has its own qualification and language rules.
