About this programme
Austria’s FSJ (Freiwilliges Soziales Jahr) is a voluntary social year in a recognised non-profit placement. Activities can include childcare, support for older people, disability services or rescue organisations. FUJ (Freiwilliges Umweltschutzjahr) is the environmental route, combining practical service with learning about nature, sustainability and conservation.
Both offer six to twelve months of supported experience, with monthly pocket money, health, accident and pension insurance, and domestic transport support through the Klimaticket. They can help you explore a field before choosing your next direction. A recognised organisation arranges the placement and selection. The usual minimum age differs: 17 for FSJ and 18 for FUJ; check the provider’s admission conditions.
Eligibility criteria

- CitizenshipCitizens of other EU countries can also participate in principle; confirm admission with the recognised provider.

An uninterrupted ten-month service can count towards Austrian civilian-service obligations where applicable. This is a voluntary learning placement with pocket money; the organising body confirms the amount, timetable and practical support.
