About this programme
Germany offers three established ways to spend a longer period contributing to a community. BFD (Bundesfreiwilligendienst) is the Federal Volunteer Service, open to people of different ages after compulsory schooling. FSJ (Freiwilliges Soziales Jahr) is a voluntary social year, while FÖJ (Freiwilliges Ökologisches Jahr) focuses on the environment; both are youth routes for people under 27.
Placements can involve childcare, cultural activities, support for older people or conservation. You join a host team, learn through practical tasks and attend seminars. All three provide pocket money and social insurance, but accommodation and meals depend on the placement. Eligibility criteria
- Age & schoolingCompulsory full-time schooling must be completed. FSJ/FÖJ: under 27. BFD: no upper age limit.
- International applicantsForeign applicants can participate; the required residence permission and living-cost arrangements must be confirmed.
- LanguageThe host sets the German-language level needed for the placement.
- Application routeApply to a recognised host or organising body. Dates and selection depend on available placements.
Important to know
Pocket money is an allowance rather than a salary. BFD can be part-time; service length and hours depend on the agreement. Confirm accommodation, meals and your remaining living costs with the host before committing.
