About Maatschappelijke Diensttijd (MDT)

Maatschappelijke Diensttijd (MDT) is the Netherlands’ youth social-engagement programme. It combines contributing to a community, discovering your talents and meeting people outside your usual circle. Projects can include supporting newcomers, helping a local organisation or organising a social event, with guidance from the project team.

You join through an MDT project organisation. The commitment depends on the route: current funded routes start at 80 hours and are completed within six months, while more intensive routes require additional hours. Dutch resident registration is part of the funded programme’s participation rules. Ask the project team about language, scheduling and expenses before committing.

Eligibility criteria

  • AgeThe government describes MDT for young people aged 12–30; the project confirms its applicable age conditions.
  • ResidenceFunded MDT participation requires registration as a resident in the Dutch population register (BRP).
  • CommitmentChoose a route whose required hours and timetable fit your availability.
  • Local projectThe organisation confirms language, accessibility and any project-specific conditions.

Important to know

MDT is a local volunteering and development programme. It does not provide a job, visa or relocation package. Projects have their own start dates and commitments; confirm the available route and any expense support with the organiser.
