EU citizens staying longer than 3 months must register their stay (Zgłoszenie pobytu obywatela UE) at the regional Voivodeship Office (Urząd Wojewódzki). Simultaneously, complete your Zameldowanie (address registration) at the local district hall (Urząd Miasta). This address registration automatically generates your PESEL (national ID number) required for taxes and healthcare. Once you have a PESEL, immediately activate a Profil Zaufany (Trusted Profile) to access all government portals online.
Income tax is withheld at source under two brackets: 12% up to PLN 120,000/year and 32% above. Young workers under 26 are exempt from income tax up to PLN 85,528/year. Tax declarations are pre-filled annually on Twój e-PIT. Opening a local PLN bank account is essential to use BLIK (Poland’s dominant mobile-payment system used for online shopping, transfers, and parking meters).
Employment automatically registers you with NFZ (public healthcare) via employer social contributions (ZUS, 9% of assessment base). Register at a local POZ (primary healthcare clinic) to choose a family doctor. Public doctor visits are free at the point of care (€0). However, most employers offer private healthcare subscriptions (LuxMed, Medicover) as a standard perk to bypass public waiting lists.
Tenants are often asked to sign a Najem Okazjonalny lease contract, which requires a notarized statement. Public transport passes are city-specific (e.g., Warsaw monthly pass costs PLN 110 / ~€25). European driving licences remain fully valid; exchange is optional unless your licence expires or lacks an expiration date.
